You’ve got something to say and you want people to listen.
You might be writing about your business, or an upcoming event, or trying to get colleagues on board with your ideas. If so you are facing some challenges and you may have already asked yourself:
- How do I get people to listen to me?
- How do I get them to care?
- How do I get them to take action?
- How can I stand out and say something different to the competition?
The answer? Learning to Write With Influence
Writing With Influence is not something many people have had to do before. Previously this skill was largely contained within the sales, advertising and marketing industries. People working in those positions had copywriting training, marketing backgrounds and on the job research and expertise.
The process was simple, businesses would spend their budget with an advertising or marketing agency, and lo the magic words* were sprinkled.
But with the advancement of the internet (and the effects of the last recession) things have changed a lot in the past few years.
- Businesses no longer have the same budget to outsource marketing, instead relying on in-house employees to write content
- More small businesses / freelancers have been established. These are people who don’t just have to ‘do’ their job, they also have to sell themselves and their work in order to get clients and orders
- Organisations reliant on funding are now having to raise their own money, or write more competitive bids
- Digital noise is increasing, it is getting harder to stand out
It’s been a time of big change and opportunity, and in the last 8 years of running my copywriting business, the one things that stands out to me is:
While writing persuasive content has never been more important in helping a business succeed, most people have never been taught to write in a way that persuades, convinces and converts readers into customers.
Which means their business might rely on a skill they haven’t yet developed
No-one has told you what to say.
- You don’t know where to start ad so you spend hours staring at, writing, re-writing, scribbling, scrunching and throwing away that first line.
- You don’t know how to sound confident without sounding pushy and you worry in case you write something that sounds like a time-share sales opportunity.
As a result it’s easy to spend hours of time and effort writing, publishing, posting and not getting anywhere.
You simply can’t afford to waste that much time looking for those *magic words.
Which brings me to…
*There are no magic words (no wait, read on)
While I would love to give you a magic word, there is no ‘one’ phrase that’s suddenly going to make people sit up and listen.
And this is a good thing.
If you’ve ever looked at marketing materials and thought:
That sounds so cringe-worthy, but [business name] looks like it’s doing well, maybe I should copy their style… even though it’s going to make my stomach churn.
You can breathe a sigh of relief.
You don’t need to use any style of words or phrases just because another business is.
A style that makes you cringe could work very well for another business. We’re here to find a style that works for you. One that shows the value of what you have to customers. I’ve used the Write With Influence system with a variety of businesses, industries and personalities and no-one came away feeling icky.
They did however, have more confidence selling what they had in a compelling way that sounded authentic to their brand and personality.
You stand for something valuable (if you’re shy about telling people this don’t worry, we’re going to build up your confidence tout suite!) and you deserve to be heard.
One of the reasons I am so excited about you taking this course is the unlimited ways you will be able to put your influential writing to use. Something you will learn as you work your way through the different modules.
Onwards!
Amy.
